Steps to Packaging Your Freight

Choosing a Pallet. Not all products are created equal. In order to provide proper protection, it is important to understand the varying needs of each product. While some items will be transported safely without a pallet, for other items it is vital that a pallet is used. If you do choose to go this route, you also need to decide whether a standardized pallet will provide enough support, or whether customization would be the the best option. Some factors that may influence this decision are the weight, size, shape, and fragility of your product.

Packaging Items. If you are stacking several boxes on a pallet, the first step is the ensure proper packaging of each individual container. Make sure to pack boxes fully, leaving no room for shifting. Using bubble wrap or packing peanuts is a great way to fill empty space or provide extra protection for fragile products.

Securing Your Shipment to the Pallet. When placing products or boxes on your pallets, stack the items close together, with careful focus and attention. Make sure that the items are stacked evenly – place the heavier items at the bottom, and the lighter items at the top. During this step, it is important to make sure that all the boxes fit perfectly on the pallet without any overhang.

Wrapping Pallets. Once the boxes or products have been placed onto the pallet, it is time to secure these items with wrapping. Wrap the base first about four or five times, and continue to move up. Once you reach the top, you can either end the wrapping or continue back down to the base. The goal of wrapping is to take this pallet with many separate items and create a unit that moves as one. You do not want parts of the palletized shipment to wobble.

Correct Labeling. Properly labeling your shipment seems like an obvious step, but a simple mistake could throw off your timeline, and leave your customers dissatisfied with your services and overall reliability. The package must be clearly marked with all of the address information including the postal code of the shipper and the consignee. Contact phone numbers should also be included. On the freight label, indicate if any pieces require Check to Shipper (C.O.D.) service.
